The Ultimate Ramayana Trail Itinerary: 7 Days in Spiritual Sri Lanka

March 12, 2026   |   Ella Rides

For many travelers, Sri Lanka is more than just a tropical island paradise; it is a land deeply rooted in ancient mythology, history, and spirituality. For those familiar with the epic Hindu scripture, the Ramayana, Sri Lanka is the legendary kingdom of King Ravana. It is the sacred land where Lord Rama, his brother Lakshmana, and the monkey-god Lord Hanuman waged a legendary battle to rescue Sita Devi. Today, the island is dotted with over 50 Ramayana-related sites, ranging from mountaintops and caves to temples and botanical gardens.

Following the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka is a deeply moving experience that brings ancient history to life. From the spot where Sita Mata was held captive in the mist-laden hills to the massive waterfalls named after King Ravana, these sites are filled with spiritual energy. This comprehensive 7-Day Spiritual Ramayana Trail Itinerary is designed to help you explore the most significant landmarks of the epic while enjoying the comfort and convenience of a private transport service.

Why Hire a Private Driver?

Many of the Ramayana sites in Sri Lanka are located in remote mountainous areas, ancient forests, or deep valleys. Public transport to these locations is highly impractical. To experience this spiritual journey comfortably with your family, we highly recommend booking a Custom Sri Lanka Tour Package with a private English-speaking driver from Ella Rides, ensuring a smooth, safe, and stress-free journey.

Day 1: Arrival & The Temples of Chilaw (Munneswaram & Manavari)

Your spiritual journey begins the moment you land at Colombo International Airport. After being greeted by your private driver from Ella Rides, you will head north towards the historic town of Chilaw to visit two of the most critical temples on the Ramayana Trail.

Munneswaram Temple

Munneswaram Temple is a legendary Hindu complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to the Ramayana, after defeating King Ravana, Lord Rama felt a heavy spiritual guilt (known as the Brahmahatya Dosha) for killing Ravana, who was a high-caste Brahmin and a devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. While returning to Ayodhya in the flying chariot (Pushpaka Vimana), Lord Rama stopped here and prayed to Lord Shiva for guidance. Lord Shiva advised him to install four Shiva Lingams in Sri Lanka to rid himself of the sin.

Manavari Temple (Ramalingam)

Located just a few kilometers away from Munneswaram is the Manavari Temple. This is the exact site where Lord Rama installed the very first Shiva Lingam, known as the Ramalingam. It is one of the only two Lingams in the world named after Lord Rama (the other being in Rameswaram, India). The temple is highly revered and serves as a powerful starting point for your pilgrimage.

After paying your respects at these temples, your driver will take you to your hotel in the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya or Dambulla) for a relaxing evening.

Day 2: The Fortress of Ravana (Sigiriya) to Kandy

Start your second day early with a hearty breakfast before exploring the majestic region of Sigiriya, which is deeply tied to the Ramayana legends.

Sigiriya: The Lion Rock

While Sigiriya is globally famous as a 5th-century palace fortress built by King Kashyapa, local folklore and Ramayana researchers suggest that the surrounding caves and plateau were used much earlier by King Ravana as a high-security palace complex. The towering rock, rising 200 meters above the plains, served as an impenetrable vantage point. You can read more about this UNESCO World Heritage Site in our detailed Lion Rock Sigiriya Visitor Guide.

Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda

Leaving the Cultural Triangle, your private vehicle will climb into the scenic hill country towards Kandy and Ramboda. Nestled in the lush hills of Ramboda is the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, built by the Chinmaya Mission. The temple is situated on the hills where Lord Hanuman is believed to have launched his search operations to locate Sita Devi. It houses a magnificent 16-foot granite statue of Lord Hanuman, and the quiet, mist-laden atmosphere of the temple provides a perfect environment for meditation.

In the evening, you will arrive in Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Here, you can visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and witness a traditional cultural dance show before retiring to your hotel.

Day 3: Kandy to Ashok Vatika (Nuwara Eliya)

Today, you will travel deeper into the mist-shrouded tea country of Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as "Little England." This region is home to the most emotionally charged site of the Ramayana—the Ashoka Vatika.

Seetha Amman Kovil (Ashok Vatika)

Located in the village of Seetha Eliya, the Seetha Amman Kovil is built on the exact site of the legendary Ashok Vatika. This is the garden where King Ravana kept Sita Devi in captivity after she refused to stay in his palace. Surrounded by towering pine trees and a rushing stream, this site is where Sita Devi spent her days praying for Lord Rama's rescue.

Visitors to the temple can witness the clear, giant indentations on the rocks bordering the stream, which are widely believed to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman when he jumped across the hills to meet Sita Devi. The stream itself is sacred, and pilgrims often collect its holy water. Learn more about the history and rituals of this sacred site in our guide on The Divine Presence of Seetha Amman Kovil.

Gayathri Peedam

Also located in Nuwara Eliya is Gayathri Peedam, the first temple dedicated to Gayathri Amman in Sri Lanka. According to legend, this is the site where King Ravana's son, Meghanath (also known as Indrajit), performed intense penance (tapasya) to Lord Shiva to receive the celestial weapon Brahmastra.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya to Ella (The Ravana Legend)

After breakfast, your journey continues south towards the picturesque mountain town of Ella. Ella is the ultimate destination for adventure seekers and is deeply associated with King Ravana’s underground network.

Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella)

One of the most famous sights in Ella is the majestic Ravana Falls, a cascading waterfall that plunges 25 meters down a rocky cliff. Legend has it that King Ravana hid Sita Devi in a cave behind these falls to protect her from Lord Rama's search parties. It is also believed that Sita Devi bathed in the pools of this waterfall during her captivity. Today, it is a popular spot for photography and spiritual reflection.

Ravana Caves

Located high up on the cliffs near the waterfall are the Ravana Caves. Local legends state that these caves were part of a massive, complex network of tunnels constructed by King Ravana. The tunnels connected various palaces, strategic fortresses, and airports (airport strips) across the island, allowing Ravana to travel quickly and secretly. The hike to the cave is steep but offers breathtaking views of the Ella Gap. If you want to explore more of Ella's attractions, check out our Ella Travel Guide.

Day 5: Ella to Kataragama & The Scorched Earth of Ussangoda

Leaving the cool hills behind, your private driver will navigate the winding roads down to the southern plains, heading towards the sacred multi-religious city of Kataragama.

Ussangoda National Park

On your way south, you will stop at Ussangoda, a unique coastal area characterized by its red soil and barren landscape. According to the Ramayana, Ussangoda was one of the airports or landing strips for King Ravana's flying chariot, the Pushpaka Vimana. Furthermore, when Lord Hanuman's tail was set on fire by Ravana's soldiers, Hanumanji set fire to major parts of Lanka, and Ussangoda is believed to be one of the regions completely scorched by the fire. The unusual soil composition and lack of vegetation today are local testaments to this legendary fire.

Kataragama Temple

In the evening, you will visit the Kataragama Temple complex, a site of immense spiritual energy sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, and indigenous Vedda people. The temple is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (also known as Murugan or Skanda), the god of war. According to legend, Lord Kartikeya was requested by Lord Rama to assist him during the final battle against Ravana, and Rama came here to thank the deity after his victory.

Day 6: Kataragama to Galle (Rumassala Hill) & Colombo

On the sixth day, you will travel along the beautiful southern coast of Sri Lanka towards the historic fort city of Galle before returning to Colombo.

Rumassala Hill (The Sanjeevani Drop)

Just outside Galle rises the prominent Rumassala Hill, which overlooks the Indian Ocean. According to the Ramayana, during the fierce battle in Lanka, Lakshmana was severely wounded by Indrajit's weapon. To save his life, Lord Hanuman was sent to the Himalayas to bring back the life-saving herb, Sanjeevani. Unable to identify the correct herb, Hanumanji lifted the entire Himalayan mountain range and flew back to Lanka. As he flew over the island, parts of the mountain fell in different places. Rumassala Hill is believed to be one of these dropped pieces. Remarkably, the hill is home to unique medicinal herbs that are not found anywhere else in the surrounding region.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Colombo

After arriving in Colombo, you will visit the Kelaniya temple. While it is primarily a famous Buddhist temple, it has a deep connection to the Ramayana. After the defeat of King Ravana, Lord Rama crowned Ravana's brother, Vibhishana, as the new King of Lanka. Vibhishana was a righteous man who supported Lord Rama during the war. The coronation of King Vibhishana is believed to have taken place at Kelaniya, and a shrine dedicated to Vibhishana stands in the temple today.

Day 7: Shopping in Colombo & Departure

Your spiritual journey concludes on Day 7. Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend the morning exploring the shopping districts of Colombo, picking up Ceylon Tea, spices, and traditional souvenirs. Your private driver from Ella Rides will ensure you arrive at the Colombo International Airport well in time for your flight home.

Practical Travel Tips for the Ramayana Trail

  • Dress Code: When visiting Hindu temples and sacred sites (such as Seetha Amman Kovil and Munneswaram), dress respectfully. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and footwear must be removed before entering the temple premises.
  • Best Time to Visit: The Ramayana Trail can be visited year-round, but the best weather for the hill country (Nuwara Eliya and Ella) is generally from December to April.
  • Travel Logistics: The distance between Chilaw, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Kataragama is vast, and the roads in the hill country are winding. Hiring a reliable private transport service like Ella Rides is highly recommended for safety, comfort, and flexibility.
